    This week Eli Lilly has announced that it is launching a new drug administering device, the Forteo pen for people suffering from osteoporosis in India.

    The newly designed pen is larger than previous ones and requires less steps to successfully administer the osteoporosis drug forteo to the patient.

    WebMD disturbingly reports that many of the eight million or so sufferers of osteoporosis in the USA do not realise that they have an increases risk of fracture due to the osteoporosis condition. A survey of sixty thousand menopausal women from 10 countries found that 43% of women who had been diagnosed with osteoporosis thought that they were no more at risk of receiving a fracture than any other post menopausal women of the same age. The article goes on to explain osteoporosis risk factors.

    The New York Times reports on the fact that researchers are puzzled by a link between bisphosphonates and rare thigh bone fractures. It seems that though there has been many reports about unusual thigh bone fractures occurring an investigation reported in the New England journal for medicine has been unable to find any clear evidence linking the use of bisphosphonates and thighbone fractures.

    Latest Osteoporosis Research

    Deeks and Dhillon take a look at the use of Strontium ranelate (Protelos(R) ) in the treatment of post menopausal osteoporosis. In the review that is published in the Journal Drugs they discuss the drugs effectiveness reducing the risk of both vertebral and nonvertebral fractures, in post menopausal osteoporosis patients.

    This weeks recommended osteoporosis site is the one from the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). This is the largest non governmental organisation that is dedicated to osteoporosis research and treatment. Their site carries information on the latest news and events in relation to osteoporosis and has a very useful section that describes the osteoporosis condition and offers facts and figures on the condition.

    This weeks recommended reading from the Osteoporosis Advice (link) site takes a look at the side effects that may occur when taking drugs to treat osteoporosis. Some of the side effects of these treatments include damage to the esophagus, jaw necrosis, musculoskeletal pains, and inflammations of the eye.
